So the zoo has been “saved.” Huzzah! Our Great Leaders have voted! And most importantly to Detroiters, the City still owns the zoo. Big point of pride there, hanging onto the zoo. Not at all lessened by such pride-diminishing facts as not being able to hang onto over one million people who’ve fled the city, or not being able to hang onto some scraps of dignity by refraining from ugly racial accusations during the zoo debate. Not to mention such points of civic pride as the utter disintegration of the city’s infrastructure, or the fact that, statistically speaking, you can grab two people off the city streets and one won’t be able to read, as was glaringly evident by the parade of dim-bulb “speakers”from the public at the council meeting yesterday. And so forth!
But we’ve still got the zoo, by God. Well, we don’t manage it, or can’t really finance it anymore, but we own the title to it, in essence. The most important thing was to not let the suburbanites get it. If that happened they might manage and operate it or something. Which they’ll be doing anyway, I guess. Er, um, yes but we own it! Take that, L. Brooks!
